Community Highlights

Over the years, we have consistently supported the community through fundraising for charity and contributions to various individuals and organizations. We have donated to numerous entities including the Texas Youth Commission, Battered Women’s Shelter, Air Force Enlisted Village, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland’s Fisher House, the George Gervin Center, the Eagle Scouts, San Antonio Food Bank, Haven for Hope, Feeding the Homeless Under the Bridge, Haiti Relief Effort, nursing homes throughout San Antonio, Baptist Children’s Home, Operation Thanksgiving Wounded Warrior Project. Additionally, we have conducted cookouts for veterans at the American GI Forum National Veterans Outreach Program, participated in the San Antonio Juneteenth Celebration, and provided support to grieving families through our Sunshine Committee.

For 30 years we have partnered with the Texas Youth Council in hosting the annual Walter C. Gaskin Picnic for at-risk youth at the Ayres Halfway House, part of the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD). The late Chief Master Sergeant (Retired) Walter C. Gaskin, was one of the founders of SANCSC, and a supporter of the TJJD.

For 28 years, we have held our annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. event to honor his legacy and contributions.

For over 20 years, we have hosted fundraisers to raise funds for scholarships in honor of our founder, Chief Master Sergeant (Retired) Walter C. Gaskin. These scholarships help students transition from high school to college. For more information, visit the link for the Scholarship Program.

Over the years, we have hosted the Ben Dunn Fish Fry each Spring and Fall. This event, named after former SANCSC member Chief Master Sergeant (Retired) Benjamin Dunn, is our largest fundraiser. The proceeds support our yearly activities.

For many years, we have supported the San Antonio Zulu Association’s annual“A Taste of New Orleans” event as volunteers and as vendors.

During the holiday season, SANCSC provides Thanksgiving baskets and Christmas gift cards to families in need, as well as visits to Nursing Homes to bring cheer to the elderly.

Since 2018, SANCSC has strengthened its relationship with TJJD through a mentoring program. Members regularly visit Ayres House residents to mentor them via the MISTER program (Mentoring, Inspiring, Supporting, Teaching, and Empowering through Rapport), aiming to build their confidence, help them reach their potential, and become valued community members upon release. In 2024, SANCSC hosted a Double Good popcorn fundraiser to supply school materials to impoverished local schools. On Veterans Day, members delivered supplies to MLK Academy, S.J. Davis Middle School, and Kelly Academy at Lowell. In 2025, we provided portable radios equipped with flashlights to the Pecan Valley Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center for the benefit of bed-bound residents. We received the African-American Community Awareness Group’s 2014 Model Community Leaders Humanitarian Award, and we were additionally honored with the TJJD Outstanding Community Supporter Award in 2014 and 2018 for fostering resilience among TJJD youth.
